Drop-Off & Pick-Up Procedures

Teacher and studentsStudent Hours

Students may enter the building between 7:30 and 8:00 a.m. There will not be adult supervision for students prior to 7:30 a.m. We’ll supervise students who arrive between 7:30 and 7:45 a.m. in the cafeteria until it is time to report to the classrooms. Our school day officially begins at 8:00 a.m.; therefore, any students arriving after 8:00 a.m. are tardy. If your child arrives after 8:00 a.m., please park and enter the building to sign him/her in so he/she can receive a tardy pass. A child who is consistently tardy is missing vital instruction and will be forced to start the day playing “catch up.” Please strive to have your child at school on time daily. It will help to develop a positive pattern as he/she matures.

Morning Arrival for Car Riders

You’re welcome to drop students off at LMES beginning at 7:30 a.m. The designated drop-off area is the driveway loop in front of the school. Please enter the lot and continue around the perimeter until you reach the sidewalk closest to the front entrance of the building. A staff member will be present beginning at 7:30 to ensure that students are supervised as they make their way into the building. We’ll help kindergarten students and those with special needs exit vehicles. We ask that all other students open the door and exit onto the sidewalk independently to prevent traffic congestion.

Escorting Your Child Into the Building

On occasion, parents wish to escort their children into the school building in the morning. If you need to escort your child into the lobby, please park in the lot in front of our building. Beginning the second week of school, we are designating our lobby as the “Hug and Kiss Goodbye Zone.” We ask parents to use this zone to give a final wish for a great day at school, then allow children to walk to their classrooms without a parent to foster their independence. Rest assured that there are plenty of staff members stationed in our hallways to help students if they need it.

Notifying Staff of Changes in Afternoon Dismissal Plans

If you know that your child’s typical dismissal plan will be altered, please write a note, and encourage your child to share it with the teacher. You may also send an email to lmesbus@hanover.k12.va.us. If an emergency arises and you need to make a last minute change, please call the school office at (804) 723-2040. Please do not e-mail last-minute transportation changes.

Early Dismissal for Appointments

If your child has a medical appointment that requires early dismissal, please let your child’s teacher know ahead of time. Parents who wish to pick their children up prior to our regular dismissal (2:20 p.m.) should plan to pick up your child at the office before 2:10. Between 2:15 and 2:20, we will dismiss students in accordance with our regular dismissal procedures.

Afternoon Dismissal for Students Picked Up from School

If you plan to pick your child up from school at dismissal, please park in the front parking lot and enter the cafeteria doors. You will need to bring/show a photo ID as part of our check-out process.
